How much of that do you reckon is a consequence of the market targeting anything that can make money as opposed to.... the market creating something out of nothing?

As compelling and insightful as these posts are... they fail to provide any evidence of the very thing they claim.

Why are people so compelled to engage with the wellness thing? Well...Maybe it works. Maybe that's why.. Maybe it makes people happy. Or maybe, as you people seem to suggest... we crave for life gurus who exploit our insecurities.

There are plenty examples of the latter. But.... Eating healthy, keeping your home clean, and having a good relationship with your family does make you happier. There's no question about it. So when we talk about the wellness thing.. There's certainly a market out for it and plenty people making money. But that doesn't prove exploitation or dopamine junkying.

Suppose for a moment that there was a magic recipe for making people happy. Do you think that the media wouldn't commercialise it? Would it invalidate it?

I think you people mistake herd mentality for something other than it is.. herd mentality. I think what you're saying is that you don't want to identify with the "mainstream." No matter what your views, people can and will box you.

And that's fine, there's nothing wrong with disagreeing with the mainstream. But if that's how you make decisions about the world... through the lens of others... you'll be just as blind as the very people you mock.

I agree that it seems symptomatic of disenfranchisement. It's funny to me how groups that seem quite different on the surface, like Jordan Peterson's bros and Gwenyth Paltrow's kale-eating white women, are essentially the same shit but wrapped in a different flag. Both are aspirational personality cults that absorb low-hanging fruit who need some kind of life guru.

I don't think all of it's bad. If someone was tuned-in to the intellectual dark web movement, got introduced to JBP by osmosis, read 12 Rules For Life and improved their life, that seems positive.

And this is where the "wellness" thing seems to diverge from normal, innocuous life advice. Eating healthy and improving your relationships doesn't come with a price tag, monetized wellness is snake oil.

Depends on your values. I value authenticity, so that would invalidate it to me. At the extreme, it's like asking if you'd wanna get plugged into a machine and live a blissful, simulated life. Sure, it might be much happier, but there's value in authenticity even if it leads to suffering. I'd rather suffer.

Yeah.. Not really coming from a place of mocking or opposition to the mainstream. I identify with the low-hanging fruit that are vulnerable to this kind of thing coz I once was too, and I'm apprehensive about it due to my own experiences with collective identity and deindividuation.

Yeah, there's no problem with that. I could similarly read whatever bible the JoHo's follow and cherry-pick some nice, inoffensive aphorisms that'll make me a better neighbor. The problem begins if I start refusing blood transfusions and sending death threats to family planning doctors.

I think this is on my mind because I've read that many narc rants here that roughly align with this shit, even though those people would balk at the idea of being compared to Instagram wellness idiots.

When I say wellness, I'm referring to that kind of holistic perfection shit that embodies wealth, success, fitness etc etc

It's super weird to me that people feel so strongly about projecting this image that they totally fabricate a life of 5am workouts, supergrain smoothies and reading Nietzsche.

Why the fuck do they care so much? Isn't it enough to be approximately functional in one domain of life? No wonder everyone I know is obsessed with Lexapro, Netflix, and tiny dogs.

I lifted some tires and drank tons of coffee.

Sometimes when I’m not doing well mentally I wonder if a lot of the reason people do things is just subconsciously to distract or cope with reality.

It’s possible that it feeds that semblance of control

There's a lot about our health that we don't know yet and I like that society is experimenting with novelties.

It's really up to you if you focus on the commercialised aspect of guided meditation, or facebook health fads.

I blend chia seeds into my muesli every morning.
