 betrayal can bring more believers, those who get scammed might decide to become the predator themselves to regain a sense of control

It is the way of conflict, to present yourself as the aggressor so that others will follow your example (ie: Cawk). It's quite effective, but in the end you'll find those with newfound talents seeing themselves as your enemy rather than as your business partner. 

You're effectively sacrificing your diplomatic means to instead double as Mammon's wingman, but on the other hand them becoming more of a like mind could lead to reaching a mutual understanding.
