While it's not explicitly required to say 'last word' in a game of 'last word', it's sporting, self-referencing, and memetic, much like the example text in it's very definition.
I suppose it depends on how the "last word" discourse began -- what medium or manner it was communicated in, with which to continue it. So... I think it needs to be primarily meme format, and I still call the picture you used of yourself as a foul, despite being "self-referencing" it's a bit of a dodge in concept, having to find previously-made memes as was formerly established. But let's call that "strike one" and move on...
