She seems very open-minded at the very least, if she'd jumped into someone else's head we'd probably see reflections of that instead.
By contrast the puppeteer had no self-awakening at all, instead wanting to control him and the events around him. Where she is open to the world he's closed off from it with his dolls, even to the point of not seeing the problem immediately with his lewd puppet shows being done on the street. He is an escapist who is inescapable to himself, while she tries to find herself in others like her pets.

What about Maxine's role in this? She was extremely antagonistic to Schwartz, but he couldn't help becoming a simp. She got along with Lotte, but didn't fully get into love right away (apparently, at the end she did, though, to some degree). She was turned on when Lotte was in Malkovich, but later that seemed to twist into the love of how Schwartz could take control of Malkovich, so what's that about? Maxine seemed unconcerned about her sexuality as a whole, or else saw one side as a power struggle.

Maxine's role is interesting in that she never wanted to go into Malkovitch's head once, not once neither literally nor figuratively. She just wanted power, like the scene she had at Schwartz's house, but I dunno motherhood hormones fucked it all up?
