It's about keeping government small so that government cannot dominate it's people such as government has done throughout history. It's about giving Americans the ability to defend themselves from an injustice government.
I know it's difficult for you to think that the American government could ever be oppressive. Sure, the CIA killed Kennedy, MLKJ, etc, but you still trust them for some reason. You want them to grow even more powerful so that they can pursue your enemies (the right) who you fear far more than big government.
