As horrible as that all is, I'd argue that it's not as bad as the medical torture that modern society has access to. At least dying in pain, you have a sense of your fate and some idea of how long the pain will last. But now you can be locked away and injected with things to break you, only to be brought back to health and awareness to get tormented even more.
