My random poker progression thread.

So far I've had mixed results with this game, and I don't really think it's okay to gamble money away so, I really want to improve, and improve my attitude towards it as well.

It's had ups and downs, but I'm in the red since two years ago when I started playing for fun. It's not ideal though, being in the red annoys me.

An overview of where I'm at.

Random small stakes tournaments play. This is where I am actually in the green, but playing feels really slow.

Cash games: in the green on 0.01/0.02 and 0.02/0.05. red above.

Zoom/fast fold/blitz in the red.

Clearly, I'm doing something right to be in the green on the really easy stakes, and something wrong above.

1) Biggest mistake so far though, is playing while drunk at higher stakes just to throw money away gambling. This is my largest leak that I need to fix.

I've learnt stuff about preflop ranges, and how to interpret people's post-flop betting percents etc. But other than this and some "feel" for the game I got over many played hands, I can't say I know that much.

This leads to the second leak:

2) not studying enough. I read like a poker book that had some really rudimentary stuff, a quarter of a more advanced one and another quarter if another one. This allows me to think about whether what I was doing was right or not, but doesn't really help me improve that much. Gotta fix this by stopping the lazyness and reading BOOKS like a nerd.

3) tilt. Sometimes it's just not my day and I should just call playing it off then splash money around, this is also a big leak

4) getting in some autistic subconscious mindset of "I need to crush this person" and playing bad because of it. My goal should never be to crush anyone in this game, but rather to earn as much as possible for it.

Number 1 is fixed by no alcohol. Number 2 by reading. Number 3 by restraint. Number 4 by self-control.

Gonna keep this thread updated daily probably, or just randomly stop. I actually kinda wanna get better here.

Very productive day today. Did nothing to further this goal. Hm, that's kinda sad.

Well I did maintain sobriety for what that's worth.

Really gotta do more tho.

Aight tomorrow, imma force myself to read like 20 pages from one of those meme books. And play for half an hour - an hour. Saturday is the best day to play this game since most people that aren't that great play it recreationally on Saturdays, Sundays, and Friday evenings. I think it's logical to play a lot during those times of greater activity. Though the counter intuitive thing, where there's also more good players trying to take advantage of this is also true.

So the demographic question is:

Is the ratio of bad players to better players higher during those times or lower?

🤔

I really need more than just ass-pulled logic to determine this. Perhaps it's the same, and I'm just coping for losses outside this "golden rush" period.

Hell yeah, today's kinda nice.

I read my 20 pages. It was some random stuff someone was explaining about some player types you encounter at the lower levels and how to play generally against them. It kinda made sense, though it was simplistic. It's not complicated really, I guess. Though, the main thing to take away from it is to deeply root the habit of observing what the others are doing while I'm playing.

Played for 20 minutes too. Rather uneventful. I started off at a 30 cent loss, because I called some dude's 3-bet with T9s, he checked the first street, then I decided, hey let's bet. This was a bad play because I didn't consider the fact that the card that showed up was advantageous to him not me.

Afterwards, I just get in, c-bet/fold, nothing eventful really, until a hand that should've left me in the red.

3-way pot, I pick up a straight draw with qj with kt and something random on the board. Someone bets, I call, the other dude calls. Then, a big red flag comes up: the second caller, actually leads the turn. Usually when this happens they just have good hands and don't want to be outdrawn, so I should've just folded there. Though, I decide to get bad instead and re-raise him. He goes all in. After some calculations, I realised I need about 30% equity to call that. I had like 20%. I say "whatever, I call anyway" which is playing badly, and I get lucky on the final card to get my straight. He had two pair. This puts me at a net 2 bucks win for today.

Considering how I didn't play that well, and how my software for showing stats wasn't working, I call it off. For tomorrow I need to fix that because I don't like playing like a blind bat, not knowing what the opponents tendencies are.

It's important to note, that the raise with QJ, was a semi-bluff, and I should've opted to fold on the re-re-raise. The correct play over there was probably to simply call his lead, considering said player's tendencies.

For the 9-10s hand, the raise was a bit on the aggressive side considering I didn't know how inclined to fold my opponent was. Should've just check folded instead most likely.

Today I skimmed through the next chapter. I found it to be about things I already have an understanding of. It was kind of tedious, simple explainations of pre-flop ranges against various types of players.

I managed to get my statistic program to work, however it still isn't live which is kindof annoying.

I also played a bit and won the grand sum of 1* American dolar.

One player limped, another did a standard raise. I find myself with K7S in the big blind. I call based on the assumption that the limper would call and never raise. Had the limper raised, I would've been pretty much inclined to fold.

The flop came great for me, 2 hearts with 7 as the highest card. In spots like this I would like to develop a leading strategy, as the big blind's range is ahead on low boards, I however elect to check, planning to re-raise any medium small bets. The reasoning behind this is that players tend to cbet too often when they shouldn't, so I should allow the initial raiser to do this mistake. The re-raise will knock out hands with enquire(overcards) and keep in draws, which I want in, and nutted hands(which might go all in against which I should fold).

The limper leads for a pot sized bet, which is weird. The initial raiser folds. I call. The limper has 7 possible set combos, and 8 ace sevens which have me crushed, and a whole lot of bad pairs, and draws with which he could bet like this which I crush. I don't want to re-raise him because if I do, he will fold out the hands that I beat and keep the ones that crush me, instead I should just call.

The flop comes a non heart 4, pairing the board. He raises again on the smaller side.

At this point he basically has a heart draw or a 7 most likely. A 4 might've not bet before, and sets become more unlikely.

I elect to re-raise with the intention of folding if he goes all in. This is really good since it prices out the draws, and puts A7 I'm bad spots.

He calls, at which point it's pretty clear he has the heart draw. River comes a non heart, I check to allow him to bluff me with the missed draws, he checks back and I am good with my pair of sevens.

I think I played this hand correctly, given the limpers actions.

after writing this it struck me as odd that the re-raise was correct on the turn but not on the flop. So I need to think if it's actually the case.

The 4 has reduced the non bluff combos the opponent might have significantly. Also, the chances of him actually getting the flush lowered. Also, with the pot being larger, the amount we had left behind was lower. He really should've checked there, and the re-raise is just capitalising on his mistake of betting small on a card that was not to his advantage.

Hmm 2 bucks gambled away today. Well, I did exhibit more self control than usual given the circumstances. This is actually a big improvement over what usually happens if I decide to play drunk.

You have better odds going all in

For the K7 hand? Or in general?

I'd like to avoid going all in with my bankroll since that makes my chance of ruin higher.

Yesterday was a blast, went -70 in a series of unfortunate events. Man, wish I could not do shit like this.

Today -4, but at least that's way more palatable.

Gonna do more tho.
