Are we gonna turn this into a debate about free will at it's core as we follow the chain of actions that determined the setting in of those lifestyles?

Blyat. Sometimes things reach some karmic conclusion, and some other times they don't but we can still pretend that they did by interpretation.

I saw it more as a discussion of probability within adaptive tendencies.

Where does that probability come in this karmic paradigm tho. All possible outcomes must be karmically consistent, otherwise, no karma.

And if there are some that get off the hook lightly, then it just follows that there's no karma.

Karma's effectively "You get back what you put into life", or "What goes around comes around". While the faith angle tends to err towards some sort of justice in the narrative, I'd instead argue that the karma that's bound to follow someone is instead adaptive. 

Our habits can be seen in our behaviors, and people can judge based on that subconsciously.
