When you control the food, you control the people.

 Collectivization was as a means to curb the Kulaks who were basically high class feudal lords that fucked over other farmers and the people. It wasn't Stalin himself just seizing the land for himself, it was him kicking out feudal lords that fucked over the smaller guys. Then with that farmland being collectivized, the output was used for social ends, i.e the society. 

Collectivization also helped modernize agriculture in the Soviet Union and is greatly a reason why famines aren't so common in that area as they had been for centuries. 

Even during the most intense years of Collectivization, most farms remained as Kolkhoz which were based off tradition Russian communal farms. 

The perception of Communism has been warped by the long degenerate decadent elites of the West, and the creatures they psyop'd in the name of Communism.
