To my mind there is no phenomena more contemptible than people who live by arousing pity in others. This is a mechanism by which the weak acquire what they desire, for other methods are ineffectual. Even worse are the people who placate them by offering the object of their desires (often in small doses, for pity is not all that intense an emotion), the weak are then habituated to act in a certain way, to embellish their woes and troubles. How could such a weak person ever fend for himself?! Our saintly, charitable souls think to themselves, as they offer the weak breadcrumbs, not as much to alleviate the persons suffering, but as a requital for them having caused them an injury, for pity is an unpleasant feeling, and the weak injures, simply in another way to acquire what they want.
It is obvious that this behaviour hinders growth, hinders one from ascension. So what if we are ineffectual? So what if our object of our desires is out of reach, out of sight, perhaps even rejects us, we will stand once more! We will climb the mountain, resist the intoxicating fog that pervades the hills, and we shall ascend! There is no air better to breathe than the clear unpolluted air one often finds in such in scenic areas. No mirage which could ever come near the sight of an entire city, an entire civilization beneath his feet.
