Merry Christmas, Yuletide, Festival of Light, Saturnalia, or whatever you celebrate this time of year.
Today is the day our "Lord", the Sun, moves 1 degree "North" in our sky after having been "dead" for 3 days and 3 nights. From today onwards, our days will be longer and to our ancestors, who relied on the Sun for absolutely everything, this day marked it's "return", or it's "birth." The latter, of course, being turned into the Nativity parable we so famously know today.
