I need help naming a certain sound

What's the term/genre/name for the dark, echoey, reverbed guitar often found in genres like darkwave (the cure, cocteu twins, ect) and space rock (pink floyd, hawkwind, ect) and new wave (a flock of seagulls)

It almost sounds like tropical island music except it's a dark tropical island and everything is outlined in neon lazers, if that makes any sense.

I should post some examples just to help you all understand what sound I'm talking about

look up any 80s darkwave/gothic rock playlist on spotify and you'll likely hear this guitar style.

but anyway, what is this sound called?

I've only heard it called "wah-wah" but with people actually making the sound, not pronouncing the words "wah wah"

It’s distortion pedal usually.

Also try little known band Sunshine Blind’s cover of Flock of Seagull’s “I Ran”, Bo — also exemplifies the effect you are looking for

I used to have an eclectic music collection before I abandoned it

I googled wahwah and listened to some playlists on spotify. While this sound may certainly use the wahwah pedal I'm inclined to think it's something different. Wahwah was used from the Beatles to Metallica to Hendrix, but the sound these darkwave/space rock artists are making is more specific. It's floatey, relaxed, ethereal. That's why I likened it to a tropical island outlined in neon.

Oh snap. I think it's that instrument that makes space noises that one of the witch's uses in American Horror Story coven. Fuck, what's is called. "Relax dear, and listen to to sounds of the universe" that part

After doing some research, I found that at least in the case of darkwave, a common guitar pedal used is the "chorus" pedal which was used to create "shimmering" sound. But then again they also used reverb and other distortions.

Actually, I did listen to it. To me it actually has less of that sound than the original version though.
