Cats are the best but i forget they kill things. My cat has brought me almost dead birds because I can't hunt and it's so sweet and disgusting

Mine bring them back alive to play with before killing it in the safety of their lair. It fucks with me to wake up sometimes and see that they brought me a live snake

I mostly get dead moles, which they don't seem to like the taste of.

Cats are most definitely killers, but that's part of their charm.

Squish caught a mouse in the apartment and all she did was boop it with her nose then let it get away.

Squish is not at all a killer. She will chase large bugs as if hunting then once she catches them she will watch them run away. The game for her is just catching- not killing.

Cats chase based on it's sense of motion, and even when they catch it it is not immediately apparent to them that it's food. What ends up being eaten vs not is always an acquired taste, but the urge to kill and chase is otherwise entirely natural for them, even down to their claws, teeth, and reaction to the taste of animal blood.

They are literally built to be killers, but we as humans however keep stunting that trait from finding it unseemly, and through cats having a food source through us they don't have to train these skills as a necessity. As such, they tend to stick to playing with their food while not acquiring as strong of a taste for wildlife.

My cats catch lots of things.

the skill to hunt and whatnot, yes?

Yes, and while in time this could in theory neotenize those traits out of them it still otherwise hasn't happened yet. At most we can stop it through stunting their growth.

this is of course just conjecture, but i think it is possible that animals have fundamental instincts that can never be breeded out

The case with dogs makes a fair argument in favor of your point.

I'm practically in a circular carving of houses in the middle of a bunch of woods.

I get to see deer and all sorts of cute wildlife here, and seeing the cats interact with them's been a real treat.
