They way that I see it is as a pair-bonding mechanism we have built-in. Specifically the brain being flooded with phenylethylamine for around 3 years, which induces strong infatuation. Thinking in terms of what primates do, that seems a non-coincidental time frame for building trust, having an offspring, and seeing that it is born before the spark fades. That's what we call "the honeymoon phase," more or less. Then after the PEA wears off, things seem more a matter of conscious choice and communication.
