That it's been turned on it's head ever since magicians like Penn Jillette popularized debunking and explaining tricks as the magician instead of as the magician's critic.
It's in style to explain your tricks now so that you can either show off your talents in spite of a lack of misdirection... or using explaining the trick as misdirection through having said speech be seemingly hypnotic and distracting. It's classic Penn to explain one trick and then do another at the same time while pretending it was "all unexpected" and junk.
