Hes just trying to prematurely separate himself from anyone using his stance to validate their ego. Ironically hes doing it for his ego.
Because from previous exchanges on such a loaded topic I've had it happen to me that people called me a centrist, so I guess I took that trauma with me and said that here. I guess to undermine any notions of me trying to take the high ground.

Realizing you have a problem is the first step to recovery. In that sense, he's better off through the use of self-deprecating irony and levity.
