what is your ideal conception of a state?

i have felt as though there are two vague camps on sc as to what an ideal state consists of , the traditionalists seem to be of the opinion that the ideal state must adhere to an inherent meta-narrative catered to the state itself, in effect the state is a macrocosm, an organism which is merely the manifestation of a society

the other section seems to view the state as a mechanical apparatus that merely acts to facilitate the needs of the masses, as though a meta-narrative is rather unimportant, that the state can merely be regarded as something of a machine rather than something that has its own life force

which ideal do you lean towards?

This is a good question. I lean towards the state merely being a machine, that its sole purpose is to care and improve for its citizens, but I still think it's important for a nation of people to share a common goal (albeit loosely defined) and for there to be a general consensus on a basic framework of values. Unfortunately that's difficult to create, I think, unless you actively work to keep the population relatively homogenous. Which you can't do without pushing some kind of meta-narrative.
