As many of you probably know, Ethiopia's northern Tigray region has long been a center of civil strife. Earlier this week, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia accused the region's separatist movement known as the Tigray People's Liberation Front of attacking a federal military base. Now, a state of emergency has been issued in the region and Ethiopian armed forces are being mobilised.
Tensions rose up again in August after the federal government halted Tigray's regional elections due to Covid. The latter held elections anyways, which caused the federal government to cut funding to the TPLF. This escalation of consequences spells little good for the already unstable region.
What is your view on the prospective socio-economic situation of Ethiopia and how do you regard the TPLF as a separatist movement in relation to contemporary East-African geopolitics?
