Imagine China smuggles Opium to the US. When the US refused, China declared war on the US and took Los Angeles, the best port city in the US for 100 years. During that time, China benefits from having a very nice trade hub in the western hemisphere, and LA is wealthy because of all the trade, all while the rest of the US is suffering from drug issues and colonization, but slowly becomes a world superpower.
