tolerating intolerance

Since the French revolution we've established tenets that our society depends on, the most notable is the fundamental principle that each individual has worth, regardless of their gender, religion or political affiliation. As an individual you derive your worth simply from being a conscious being. That's our liberal society, right

Not every culture agrees with this principle, so if other cultures mix into ours and e.g. have people that refuse to shake the hand of someone of the opposite sex, should we allow them to express their freedom or should be not tolerate their intolerance?

I am aware that this is not ground breaking but I cannot find a satisfying conclusion to this conundrum

I'm inching closer to a strict enforcement of enlightenment values, which might seem hypocritical at first but really if we don't fight tooth and nail to preserve them, our value hierarchy will be undermined and eaten up from the inside out

so e.g. not allowing religious symbols and headscarves for public servants

It's a possible slippery slope though because secularism is certainly not immune to fascist ideation

This is probably easier for Europeans, whereas in USA we're already a "melting pot." I definitely see the point of cultural homogeneity. It wasn't even long ago that a dude got beheaded in Paris over an illustration of Mohammed or whatever happened. We're actually more integrated here, but not without issue. I would think Belgians have a good chance of maintaining a monolithic culture, as opposed to countries like UK and Sweden.
