Serial Experiments Lain

If you're an anime fan, you may have heard of an anime called Serial Experiments Lain.

If you haven't or have but haven't seen it, here's the link to the entire series for free on YouTube-

And if you're a music fan, here's the soundtrack. It has a pretty unique vibe-

So, why is this notable enough to post about specifically?

Well, Lain is all about the internet and its philosophical implications. What starts as a peek into the internet leads the protagonist on a quest for her sense of self, a quest with mang questions and implications regarding both her and the other characters.

It's a thought provoking look into the internet, from a sci-fi/cyberpunk perspective and it's ahead of its time.

This was released in 1998 before the internet was all that widespread and before smartphones existed. Additionally the idea of online "personas" and the question of the internet's impact on our collective consciousness was far away due to the limitations of the time.

So essentially, it's science fiction from the timeframe of when it was made. But today it's eerily close to non fiction.

If you're into philosophy especially regarding the internet or just want to see something unique and surreal, this one is for you.

That ended up becoming one of my favorite animes.

I was worried during the first during episodes that the show was going to be too campy, or that Lain was just going to be perpetually autistic. But the way the animation and atmosphere was done kept me reeled in. And it's only 3/5ths of the way into the show until the end that everything starts to come together, yet the show still doesn't directly address what was really happening. I appreciate a story that can throw curveballs. Also some of the theories about what Lain was /is were amusing.

I'm still trying to figure it out.

I've only gone through it one time on Cads recommendation, I think it's something I'd have to watch 2 or 3 times to really make it   coherent.

It's so slow yet the the skips into abstraction become larger and larger as the story goes on.

I think part of what makes it so impactful is the amount of time people tend to spend online and how in these days it's in a sense became the real world pretty much for some people.

It definitely hits home in that way. Interestingly enough it seems to be depicting a reverse simulation theory where the simulation is real and reality isn't for Lain. And for some, the internet certainly feels more real than real life. Also the way she changes her character so drastically in the wired, it's relateable in a sense.

It's possible that this is just well written scifi, but the way times have became imbue it with new memetic relavence. Lain could be seen as a symbol of the 21st century in that way.

I tend to check what others think right after I watch a show. Saves me from engaging in theory on Reddit, etc. So I watched a bunch of videos, and found this one to be the most sensible:

It was not only predictive during its time, it even tapped into VR in a sense. Which was far from the table at that point.
