Figure out his threshold for deep tissue massaging, how much he can handle. If it's too light then you aren't doing much of anything, and if it's too much then he's probably yelping in pain. I found myself for instance a fan of Thai massage from how rough it was, while some find even Swedish massage to be too much. It's an individually based thing.

Otherwise I suggest working on your hand strength, which can be done through said massages happening often enough or through drills like squeezing a stress ball or something. You'll also want to keep the pads of your hands soft despite strengthening them up, as it's super important to be able to feel all the little bumps and knots under the surface. This can be done with hand lotions and other skin care products while otherwise aiming to get rid of callouses or other obstructions.

Basically aim to rub in gentle repeated circular motions at knotty spots in the direction of the body's natural contours enough times and you'll get a feel for it. I kind of imagine the tactile sensations somewhat like kneading dough. I otherwise highly recommend music, massaging in silence is otherwise a very quick way to get bored even when otherwise amidst passion, and massages aren't quick, they're a time investment.

I also highly recommend massage oils; They help your hands glide more easily and it feels sooo much better for the receiving end, but it's not required. Some nice smells from incense can also make it easier for the one being massaged to let go.
