It used to be easy to jump into long debates, and now it feels a bit like a chore, if I'm not extra peppy that day, like with the China post. I've been debating Inq for years now, and I've gotten about as far as you. Pointing out his tendency to recontextualize his own past thoughts, feelings, and arguments to align with where his head is at currently, only to be met with an adorable and frustrating childish confidence that he never changes and therefore whatever he's saying now must be what he said then. And pointing out his tendency to appeal to a convenient and malleable authority of "common sense", when all else fails, typically devolves the argument into an endless back and forth about what can be "expected" and what normality is supposed to be. It is fun, though. He's one of the few people who can just go on debating forever with me, even if he thinks it's never going to get anywhere. I really enjoy watching you two debate. His learning to take you more seriously over time has been a fun evolution.

Sounds eerily familiar. Apparently, it's impossible to tell if someone has post-rationalized or moved the goalpost according to his view. That's a pretty convenient view to hold.
