I thought you were trying to telegraph that to people to shmooze easier friendships with "I guess he's human after all" kinds of steering. 

If they know you're fucked it becomes easier to get people to sympathize with you, which gave me the impression you were doing it on purpose. 

To actually answer the OP though, they likely see your gestures as a form of compensating. Putting on a strong front typically is symptomatic of prior damages, based on fucked up peer modeling and a warped notion of what'll happen if you don't. 

Confidence is seen in how easy it is for you to relax.
