I actually watched it last night, just to see if all of the hate it was getting was merited. I went in thinking, "OK, maybe this is actually an artsy coming-of-age film that gets a bad rap." Hell nah.
Young girl, conservative house, finds a bunch of girls who dance all the time. She wants to dance too, and vibe or whatever. And from there on when she learns how, there are like 4 or 5 of these really long dance sequences that zoom in on their genitalia. Scenes like little girl getting her pants pulled off, a kid flashing during a dance video, posting selfies of 11 year old pussy on social media. An ending that was totally useless other than the girl ditched her friends on stage and went back to her mom, crying. She quit dressing skimpy and went outside and played jump rope. Such amazing depth. The best scene is when the girl's mom seen her dressed like a ho and threatened to kill her.
If anyone doesn't know what Jim and I are talking about, this is a pretty choice moment of the movie...one among many like this.
It's amazing how much shit is becoming normalized.
My favorite part of all this are those defending it via its 'depth', but it just seems like a shitty movie that doubles as inappropriate - a coming of age film gone too far.
Evidently its based on some essay about female oppression written by a muslim womans and is supposed to be a satire of some sort.....how sophisticated.

My main criticism with the narrative people are pushing about the "depth" is that there are so many more ways to portray kids experiencing sexual development than to have them twerking for like 20 minutes total in the movie. But no, we got this basket-on-the-head ho reducing everything down to $ex:
I think we can all agree that she's a high-powered woman who knows and loves her own body, and won't take no for an answer.

Totally normal, ask any director.

It looks like it's meant to be jarring despite the like, Footloose-ish feel otherwise behind it, but I'm not sure.

I'm sure companies like Disney agree with you:

Wowee.
I remember Dan Schneider over at Nickelodeon doing some very reminiscent stuff.
