Fast talk can do really funny things to people.
Confidence + Overloading their brain = Differing forms of Compliance on weaker willed subjects. Derren Brown plays with this a lot when scoping people out. People who are otherwise sharper about it, whether from experiences from a lifestyle that challenges that area or from natural ability, tend to be more resistant vs confidence strategies.
It doesn't help that a lot about people can essentially be cold read.
