I hope you liked the catchy title. I'm not going to discuss Tryptamine, though....
I'm wrestling with the meaning of life... It sounds deep, I know. But... I find myself chasing for something all the time, a bit similarly to how Luna does. It's money, respect, position, knowledge, whatever, you name it, something different every time. And... As a society, we keep running things by these dreams that people have. That's how most capitalistic societies work. And I thrive off of conflict... When I win, which is often. There's something lovely about seeing someone desperate, and you're the cause of that... It's exhilerating.... Anyway, about society... There's plenty of research that shows that comfort and material possession doesn't really make people happy. I can vouch for that, for sure, because I'm.... dissatisfied, disappointed, and reluctant to accept my position all the time. Yet I keep doing the same thing, which is chase after stuff that I don't really want.
And it makes me think... Why should we give a shit about well-being, the society, evolving as a species, making sure that kids have a safe environment, reduce suffering, reduce death, etc etc etc, when people seem.... more or less similarly dissatisfied as we move up in the well-being spectrum. What exactly motivates most people to make better and better societies, is it more an instinct rather than any well-thought plan... These are ideas that move so many people but seemingly don't have much thought in it.
Have I fundamentally misunderstood something? I could be just projecting my own thoughts on the whole society, much like Tryptamine projects his fear of loneliness on the rest of this forum. But... I don't see it. Most people don't think... Maybe that's the issue. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons, if you really sat down and wanted to come up with good reasons to strive towards well-being, you'd come up with a handful of good ones. But all of them would be just a result of your confirmation bias. The fact that every story line, every book, every movie follows the same conflict-resolution scheme probably means it's some ancient lizard-brain remnant lurking in our human brains that tells you to enjoy conflict and adventure... With a happy ending...
But people are never satisfied with a happy ending that goes on forever... Fuck that'd be so fucking boring I'd probably buy a shotgun and go on a killing spree. Oh... Maybe that's the reason there are so many school shootings in the US, but none in Asia... Because you're such spoiled brats and you get everything handed to you on a silver plate, so you feel unchallenged, bored, and want to shoot people. So is the fact that we, as a society, chase well-being just because we're really bored and we're convinced that it will kep us busy for probably enough time to go extinct?
To answer your question, i think-
we do it because it’s a better system than the alternative. Which- if you see the suffering in places like Yemen or Syria, you’ll understand why we chase well being.
The alternative is- not only impossible to survive but, it’s true suffering. If you put yourself in the lives of these people for just one week, you would be eternally grateful for, what we have here, I think.
it’s just what we have that works, it’s what we’ve got to work with. It’s not about keeping ourselves entertained, it’s about- no one wants to suffer.
You’re just taking your comfort and opportunity for granted.

I've been in a few places with much more suffering than where I am currently at... And where I am currently at... bores me. I mean take you as an example, you've been to some dark places... Are you eternally grateful for what you have? I think not.
After you get what you want, you get a short rush of dopamine and your body rewards you for making it one step further... And then poof, one week, or maybe a few months later, it's gone. Even if my situation improves, I will take my comfort and opportunities for granted. Those kids at yemen..... They will take their comfort and opportunities for granted as well, now and in the future, irrespective of circumstances. So why bother?
