The amount of homework assigned to students is not only non-essential to learning, but counterproductive to it. It’s inefficient and ineffective, and the amount of time spent at school just watching a teacher preach all day is an archaic waste of time. It’s not only not necessary, but a huge waste of financial resources, and of students time.
It shouldn’t be that you spend 8 hours in a chair, listening to someone talk about material you’re not even going to fully retain, and half of you may not fully understand- only to go home, and spend the rest of your entire evening, finding the answers to questions- simply to regurgitate the information at the end of the week or three week period on quizzes and tests.
This isn’t learning, or education- at all.
As someone who left this learning environment and then switched to Montessori school, it’s been proven by these schools, that it’s completely unnecessary and undoubted way or learning.
My happiness improved significantly when the burden of completing 8 hours of meaningless tasks because you’re a “gifted kid” was taken off my shoulders.
Piling the papers high to the point that the kid can’t breathe underneath the weight of it’s burden is completely rediculous, it’s also unethical, due to the amount of harm it causes the students psychology- which, due to the effects of stress, also affect the students long term Mental and physical health.
In some cases, there are students who even commit suicide over failed classes.
Why don’t we change the way we are doing things?
In recent years, they’ve introduced a new way of teaching math within my school district. I was excited to see the new curriculum style- I thought it was a breakthrough for those on the education board who’ve been fighting for change for decades.
But I was extremely dissapointed when I found it was actually worse, than what we began with. Now students are no longer taught to think critically about math, and not taught how to understand math- they are simply taught a how to regurgitate it. Like a robot thinks- not like a human being.
This isn’t learning at all, and is a huge disservice to the people of younger generations. As the brain cements at a certain period in childhood development, and there are certain thinking processes they will never be able to regain skill wise later in life.
Meaning their ability to think abstractly about mathematical theory will be greatly hindered- and those who would of become astrophysicists, will say things like, “I was never good at math.”
there are brilliant kids everyday who say, “I’m no good at math” when this isn’t true- it’s just the way you’re being taught to think about it, is entirely wrong, in contrast to the way your brain comprehends it best. You’re actually very capable, intelligent, and brilliant- perhaps than the other students. You just think differently, not wrong.
But they’re being told, that it’s wrong. And made to feel incompetent.
How disgusting is that??
Anyway, I’m not on the board of education or in that realm career wise, but my best friend is, so he talks about it with me often is why I’m even half aware of the issues going on in this area. He majored in education because he’s passionate about it and wants to be on the board to make changes.
It’s just flat out unlawful what they do to kids. Like, school, is torture. Essentially. It’s awful the way it makes people feel. It doesn’t have to be that way at all.
