I suppose it's fair for you to think this in relation to protecting yourself anyway, as in many cases prevention is the best cure.
Others though may find answers they'd not have found otherwise without it. A drug taken at the right time in my life for instance is what saved me from ending things.
I'd say it's a matter of context and individual needs. If there's chronic insomnia for instance, and you can be smoking weed versus getting addicted to sleeping pills as options (or drink yourself into a coma etc), doesn't one poison seem a lot more preferable to the other?
It's about seeking a balance, and for many what they need isn't as clearly a demonstration as watching the D.A.R.E. PSA. Some people need the lesser drugs to function, and those who've found themselves entrenched in the deeper ones will usually need to stairstep out.
It's usually compared to digging yourself into a hole with a shovel: You can't just dig upwards to get out, you can't just hop out, sometimes you need to dig yourself some stairs.
I believe blanc should stop doing drugs.
She should wake up early every morning, and go for a run/swim. After this she should eat a healthy breakfast. She must then work for a considerable amount of time, doing a task that's both challenging and rewarding. In the afternoon she must pursue her artistic interests. Then she should go to bed early.
Repeat till death.
There, I fixed everything, you're welcome blanc :D!

What do you do on the days when you just don't have it in you to trudge forward?
In my experience, people can accomplish amazing things with the right motivation. The challenge is finding that motivation. So far, blanc has her parents to look after her, and little will to change herself or her ways. As long as the will is weak, it can not fight the inertia of keeping things as they are.

What do you think would constitute proper motivation?

As I said this is the hard part. Motivation is very different from one person to the next. It can be anything from religion to raw survival of self or others. Be it for the good or worse, it is the only thing that moves people to change. Everyone, EVERYONE, has their levers.
Someone can find motivation to work towards something they want, or away from something they don't want.

What of people who are chemically drained of said willpower, or born with a deficiency in it?
Is willpower a choice?
Turncoat said:What of people who are chemically drained of said willpower, or born with a deficiency in it?
Brain chemistry is not set in stone. We are wired to be responsive to our environment and external factors. Put any man under the right pressure, he will react.
Is willpower a choice?
It can come from within, or be forced onto us by circumstances. For example, Assange spent 7 years in a small room out of fear of USA extradition. Face the right circumstances, willpower follows.
