I hate cats. They make my nose run, give me asthma, and overall fuck up my day. They are unnecessarily aloof to people and only care about being served by unwitting humans who don't know any better. Pets are expensive and chain you to the house too much anyway.
All you have to do is get your wife to put one in a plastic sphere and you're good to go.

Cats are like people, you need to make them respect you and they have quirks, they are funny and will give you affection, not just when hungry, if they like you. They may even try to protect you from danger, but their skittish nature makes them more unlikely, it depends on the cat personality.

Animals have an odd gift for reading body language.
It's part of why it's so important to learn how to be good at it; It's the main component for "speaking" animal.
