They were generally uninspired back pre-reboot when they just copied fight scenes from famous martial arts movies frame by frame. Once they realized that they were really more about bait-and-switch ranged attacks, they suddenly found their niche (jump kicks in this case count as a ranged attack).
The later, uncopied art tends to stick to less combos, emphasizing the impact of a single hit, which with a bunch of pre-built expectation drums suspense despite being less quality than actual martial arts.
The show was meant to be about Wizards anyway, so ranged attack emphasis (or punishment for being hit by melee once being emphasized) is clearly their writing strength.
