Alexander III was rumored to be a bastard rather than Philip II's legitimate son. At Philip's daughter's wedding his wife announced her pregnancy, and a General congratulated Philip on the possibility of having a legitimate heir. Philip stabbed the General in anger and was killed in the confusion of the ensuing brawl by his own body guard.
Alexander, highly respected by his military was elected king regardless of his questionably paternity.
Well here is the doozy. Do you know how the rumor of Alexander being a bastard enough came to be? Alexander's mother was an Epirus Maenad, a follower of Dionysus. As part of her ritual lifestyle she owned countless pet snakes. Philip had a dream he was sealing his wife's vagina with wax, and the wax had the seal of a lion on it. His advisors told him this dream meant his wife was pregnant with a son who would have lion like qualities (after all, you don't seal an empty jar.) He peaked through their bedroom door to spy on her after having this dream and saw her dancing with a large snake.
She had a habit of also sleeping with snakes in her bed to ward off intruders, and this guy, you know what fucking conclusion he comes to? Instead of assuming that his eccentric wife is just dancing with one of her beloved pets he comes to the conclusion that the snake is actually the animagus of a god, and his wife has been having an affair with this shape shifting deity.
So Alexander's father was either Phillip, or a Greek god who pulled a fast one by shape shifting into a snake. Philip died over this dispute.

The blood on my hands covered the holes
Phillip eventually came to regret the damage his doubt had caused. Alexander's right to the throne was at risk, and to mend public opinion of infidelity he had a statue erected of Himself with both of his parent, Queen Olympias, and Alexander standing with him. He made a point to bring Alexander on military quests and include him in political dealings from a young age, even rejoicing when before his death the Macedonian citizens began to address Alexander as King and himself as General. (Plutarch, "Alexander")
Attalus's comment wishing Philip a legitimate heir was not truely a wish for good luck, but a back-handed comment hoping to disinherit Alexander.
