The day is artificially created
Nobody knows what to celebrate
The Swedes already have a better holiday, Midsummer's Eve
Swedes are not the flag-waving kind
I like Midsummer better.
We do know what to celebrate (the end of the Kalmar Union and the independence of Sweden from the Danes in 1523) but Midsummer as a tradition goes back way further, which is why I think it's more popular.
That's not to say that the national day isn't celebrated or that no flags are waved. It was actually called "Swedish Flag's Day" before 1980 ish.

i liked that the Swedish flag was shown on National Day . flag waving done right shows pride in your country.
do you think most people dont care about National Day?
on a different subject, i was happy to see that Sweden finally closed their borders.

Is border control still active? and how does the EU feel about this? i think its a good thing to control your borders.

I've read that about 30% celebrate the National Day (while 36% of immigrants do lol), which can be compared to 84% celebrating Midsummer. Sweden follows a general European trend though when it comes to how important the National Day is to people.

Basic border control was set up in the wake of 2015 between Sweden and Denmark and it's still there afaik. The EU isn't particularly happy about it, nor are the residents in southern Sweden because it interferes with the Copenhagen-Malmö region (which is tightly integrated). They will probably go back to no border control in 6-12 months.

I can't really speak for them, but this has not stopped us Americans from having celebrations (I mean come on, look at Halloween and Thanksgiving, it's artificial as hell), nor the world making up a holiday for every day of the year (ie: Talk Like a Pirate Day).
