Cool facts about the human beings: the Disgust system

It's pretty cool how our brain is wired.

Humanity would be extinct if we never reproduced.

Above that, during the caveman time, we were quite the ugly bunch, hairy, and well, our hygiene was pretty terrible.

So how a man would stick their cheesy penis inside something hairy, dirty and smelly?

The scientists explain.

"Sex and disgust are basic, evolutionary relevant functions that are often construed as paradoxical. In general the stimuli involved in sexual encounters are, at least out of context strongly perceived to hold high disgust qualities. Saliva, sweat, semen and body odours are among the strongest disgust elicitors. This results in the intriguing question of how people succeed in having pleasurable sex at all. One possible explanation could be that sexual engagement temporarily reduces the disgust eliciting properties of particular stimuli or that sexual engagement might weaken the hesitation to actually approach these stimuli. Methodology Participants were healthy women (n = 90) randomly allocated to one of three groups: the sexual arousal, the non-sexual positive arousal, or the neutral control group. Film clips were used to elicit the relevant mood state. Participants engaged in 16 behavioural tasks, involving sex related (e.g., lubricate the vibrator) and non-sex related (e.g., take a sip of juice with a large insect in the cup) stimuli, to measure the impact of sexual arousal on feelings of disgust and actual avoidance behaviour. Principal Findings The sexual arousal group rated the sex related stimuli as less disgusting compared to the other groups. A similar tendency was evident for the non-sex disgusting stimuli. For both the sex and non-sex related behavioural tasks the sexual arousal group showed less avoidance behaviour (i.e., they conducted the highest percentage of tasks compared to the other groups). Significance This study has investigated how sexual arousal interplays with disgust and disgust eliciting properties in women, and has demonstrated that this relationship goes beyond subjective report by affecting the actual approach to disgusting stimuli. Hence, this could explain how we still manage to engage in pleasurable sexual activity. Moreover, these findings suggest that low sexual arousal might be a key feature in the maintenance of particular sexual dysfunctions."

This interplay has a really funny effect on fetishes, as does extreme emotions translating into sexual arousal in general.

Stress itself is an aphrodisiac, which lets it translate for anger, sadness, fear, and disgust quite easily. A lot of people's turn ons tend to be surprisingly contradictory in the first place, like someone overly demanding and bossy wanting to be bossed around in the bedroom, or an OCD neat freak getting freaky over some mud.

This also probably helps jocks and chads be able to be a dick and still get some (as well as the display of confidence and pheromones), while overly nice, cleanly people hit "the friend zone" from not triggering them enough. I've seen some enjoy sex literally as just a way to try to wrestle control over a losing situation, such as after an argument, to assume some sort of autonomy over the situation (showing it to be about power) or to undermine the loss itself by reducing the "winner" into something more manageable and vulnerable.

Sex also seems to elicit what I've called the "Pillow Talk Effect". They don't just find it easier to do disgusting things, they also find it easier to tell secrets and otherwise behave more uninhibited.

This is a really interesting point I haven't considered before. It could also be why some men prefer easy women or street girls. Not out of convenience, but out an adequate level of disgust.

The idea behind this article also goes a decent distance to explain some fetishes. Getting pissed on or shit on should ordinarily be a pretty negative experience, but it seems that what is disgusting actually becomes arousing. Really good article, Tryptahomie, this will have me thinking for a while.

It does play interestingly with the "Madonna-Whore Complex", yeah...

Well, so not all is lost for incels if Turncoat theory is right. If the girls find most of them neckbeard disgusting, at some point they will find a freaky.

Now I wonder what happens with someone who is unable to shut off the Disgust system.

The reason I searched for that, is because I was watching porn with this really hot girl, beautiful face, beautiful body. The guy was super horny and excited, just fingering, her asshole. And he first licked his finger to lubricate, then stuck in there, took it out, suck his dick, stuck in again and repeated the same stuff over and over again.

And I was like, shit, I am pretty sure that he makes it look good but he is probably sniffing something and tasting something even worse.

Hmm, I always figured people wanted what they didn't have in life, in bed... so the boss likes getting stuffed in a duffle bag, beaten with a stick, and called rude names, the way that most women like getting dominated says a lot about how they feel in life, etc. I even thought fetishes that are more physical than psychological, like feet, waterworks, spit, etc., must have had a psychological basis. For example, somehow you associated piss with sex early on, and the seed grew from there. Even with feet, feet are a vulnerable part of the body. I didn't think it was a coincidence they and navels are a very popular fetish. God... you are all so disgusting. Anyway, after poring over this article, I actually agree with Tryptamine here. Getting shit on or pissed on is, in fact, normally a negative experience. Interesting read.

Obviously it doesn't work like that. The theory is heavily flawed and had me scratching my head.

As for stress: All forms of arousal have the same physiological effects, but it's how we interpret them that gives us our emotions in the moment. Which brings possible Misattribution of Arousal, like a girl becoming aroused from the fear induced by a rollercoaster ride misattributes it as lust for her date, etc.

I reckon Tc meant to say arousal.

As for Chads/jocks being able to be jerks and get away with it, I would say this is despite the fact and not necessarily something that helps. Of course we have to define what "being a jerk" actually means. There's being assertive and putting yourself first and then there's actual malicious and demeaning put down type of behavior.

For women, especially the more beautiful, they're used to men being doormats, so being somewhat of a jerk makes you automatically interesting and novel and a bit of a challenge. Also, these jocks are already high value, their "jerk" demeanor makes them dominant, and being part of the sports team makes them high status, so they are a "catch". So when they make social faux pas it is "tolerated" a little bit more if the female is really into them. If she's not, then the higher value you are, the nicer you want to come off, as to not further disparage the difference in value between you and the girl, and thus make yourself unattainable to her.

Most jock type dudes aren't jerks at all. And from what I've seen, the real assholes(who go out of their way to demean others) actually get less pussy than the dudes who learn to chill and give good vibes.

I did list more than just the disgust factor alone, I even went into how it relates to fetish behavior, not just conventional attraction.

You mean the word I actually used?

People need to actually try reading my posts.

It's about power, and power's expressed in many forms, "being a jerk" included.

Have you not seen the seemingly contradictory display of people claiming they need nice, gentle partners, only to end up with seemingly bad people? People don't have their best interests in mind logically, but rather instinctively.

"Nice guys finish last" becomes a thing the minute it appears to be from a lack of self confidence (on average).

If they're bending over backwards over another's needs too much instead of having the appearance of some sort of power struggle or synergistic comfort, it begins to look desperate.

Most jock type dudes aren't jerks at all.

Testosterone pushes people in a variety of ways, and a lot of them don't necessarily even see the aggression they're sewing into social life. It definitely produces louder, more obvious jerks than incel culture.

You'd be surprised...

It's more about what sorts of partners they're fishing for.

You listed everything under stress. Including the jerk theory.

Being a jerk is only midtier power. Better than a nice guy pushover, worse than a genuine man or a strong man who isn't a jerk. Effort is also a part of power, and a jerk generally expends more to do extra shit. He's also met with more resistance from people who won't like him, which would be a bit. But even the people who do like him might eventually get tired of his shit because most people don't want to be around a person that gives them negative emotions and makes them feel like shit.

The jerk would attract more insecure type girls, dysfunctional/emotional problems masochistic women, or jerk women themselves. Jerk behavior can polarize harder, so some women will love it, but you also burn lots of bridges a more social savvy dude won't. But really, it depends on what behavior we define to be under "jerk". Do the people deserve it or are they just being an asshole for no good reason?
