I have close to around 40 alters (alternate personalities) that I know about. And I'm close to about 12 of them. I first started showing signs of having DID way back in 5th grade and became aware of having alters in middle school. We didn't get along well at first and I mainly told them to shut up and to leave me alone.

The first one I formed a close friendship with was Ledger back during the last half of 8th grade (2008). He helped me with standing up for myself and fighting against bullies as well as gave me friendship & protection. Today he is my main protector and one of my closest friends. Ledger helps me with day to day life, tries to encourage me to make better choices, is very great at making me feel better, protects me, keeps me company, is great with advice, and takes over if life gets to chaotic to give me a break. And as of November hes also my boyfriend. Ledger being in my life is one of the best things that has happened to me, and I appreciate & love him so much.

Most of my system (a group of DID or osdd-lb alters) are actually fictives like Ledger is. Fictives are alters that are based on fictional characters. The reason being that my brain found comfort in these characters or they had skills needed to get through very bad situations. I also escaped reality with watching tv, playing video games, and reading which might have impacted my brain choosing fictional characters. Plus I have a lot of anxiety and people didn't treat me well growing up, but these fictional characters were a familar comfort over my brain making a lot of original alters.

Like Beetlejuice for example... In his movie hes a pretty sexual perverted ghost with boundary issues. He also has a thing for goths (Lydia) in his movie and in his cartoon series... and me, I'm alternative/gothic so my brain probably thought we'd get along. The most important part being the the sexual part though. And as an alter of mine, hes a sexual protector. His role is to take over during non-consenting sexual experiences and take one for the team so I (or someone else) don't have to experience it. Hes been needed multiple times in the past, and he is still around to help again in that way if I should unfortunately need his help in that way again in the future. In addition to that, when I was younger I also had a difficult time accepting that I was bisexual and then later on I had a difficult time accepting the types of things that I'm into or wanted to try. I hated myself so very very very much. Beetlejuice is a pretty nonjudgemental guy and encourages sexual acceptance, experimentation, and just being who you are in general. He helped me with so many things, and today I'm comfortable with being bisexual and ok with the fact that I'm pretty damn kinky. If I ever need advice or someone to help encourage me to just go for someone/something that I wanted, Beetlejuice is there for me or for any of the other alters really.

Hes also pretty fun to spend time with; likes pranks, making jokes, horror movies, music, and playing video games to name as few things. Plus he is much more relaxed (doesn't have my anxiety issues) than me, less emotional & much more extroverted. And he also, oddly enough, gets along great with my mom unbeknownst to her. In fact hes the one who gets along with her the best and is her preferred "daughter" which is very funny & amuses me to no end. I've had mom be very very annoyed at me multiple times and tell me things like she wishes I was more like how I was yesterday, but unknown to her, that wasn't me. Almost every single time that happens, it Beetlejuice she was talking with & spending time with and not me lol. So I guess as an unofficial secondary role he is unintentionally my mom's better "daughter" lol :P

Another fictive I get along great with is Slenderman. Truly he is a Slender friend, not just a man. He cares a lot about nature, knowledge/intelligence, and order. He likes reading, going for walks in the the woods, piano music, and having deep conversations. Hes a proper gentleman type. Hes great to listen to and have more serious discussions with, helps with keeping certain alters (the other creepypasta alters; Laughing Jack, Jeff the killer, some of his proxies who are also great) in line/order, gives serious life advice, protects people and actually likes being clean & cleaning his surroundings... which is very useful cus most of us aren't good at keeping things clean... He appeared towards the end of my 12th grade year and was concerned with my school work, grades and my upcoming college classes. Today he still encourages practicing skills and learning new things. Slender is very different from most of my alters but is an important and very appreciated alter and for sure helps with our functioning.

Other than Beetlejuice and some creepypastas, there are also video game character fictives (Waluigi, Ryo Hazuki, Ren of Heavens...), a few tv show character fictives (Dr Drakken, shego...), and a lot of Joker fictives. There is 7 (or 6 depending on how technical you want to be) different Jokers and one Batman. Believe it or not, most of the Jokers function really well out here, aren't causing trouble, and aren't doing horrible illegal things. Ledger, who I previously mentioned, is one of the jokers (Ledger Joker, The Dark Knight). There is also Arthur Fleck (the 2019 Joker movie) who is very close friends with Ledger & me, and is another protector. As well as John Doe (Telltale Joker), Jay Napier (a mix of multiple versions of the joker, mainly Mark Hamil's), Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson's Joker, from Batman), Hamster (Joker from The Batman. Its a nickname I gave him and it stuck), and Jerome Valeska (Gotham) who is technically not the Joker but he is consider part of the group. I get along really well with like half of them.

Some other really important fictives are Sportacus and Robbie Rotten from the kid's show Lazy Town. Sportacus is positive and doesn't give up easily and is great at cheering people up. He also encourages healthier choices and is great with the children alters. And Robbie is on the other side of the coin. He likes relaxation, sugary food and is a fun person to hang out with especially if life is kicking your ass and you need a break. A few of my alters are fun loving sweet tooths actually; Robbie, Laughing Jack and Kandy Cooper (one of my alters who isn't a fictional character.) Its good to have balance.

I think the one alter people are most surprised or worried about is Vaas Montenegro who comes from the video game Far Cry 3. However this Vaas ISN'T trafficking people or heavily involved in drugs. No, this Vaas is a strong, tough, brave and protective guy who mainly cares about fitness & working out. Yes he is still flirty and has mood swings, but as long as you are nice to us you have nothing to worry about. In fact most of my villain fictives work like that; be nice and they'll probably be nice to you too or at least tolerate you. They are much much more than what their source material shows them to be. They aren't a danger. I promise.
