Consumerism

This buzzword has been floating around for awhile now. I haven't ran it past anyone here yet and I want to know your stances.

I am with you, even unto the end of the age

I’ve been thinking about Marc Auge’s notion of the Non-place and there’s a consumerist dimension in the idea.

The Non-place is a setting in which there is not a here and now in any significant way – I’ll be focusing on the spatial dimension. Regarding the here Auge states, “the European, Western 'here' assumes its full meaning in relation to the distant elsewhere - formerly 'colonial', now 'underdeveloped'”. The debasing of the here is then a consequence of the mass loss of elsewhere.

In the times of global mass production objects are not the only things mass produced, so too are spaces. Across America you can exit any interstate and find yourself on a stretch of road with gas stations and fast food restaurants; typically, no matter where you exit, it will be the same gas stations and fast food restaurants. All the Mcdonalds look the same and serve the same products, all the shopping malls contain the same stores, all the interstate motels feel the same.  When everything is everywhere the distinction between here and elsewhere is lost - the landscape becomes riddled with non-places. The non-place is thus the result of the mass production and consumption of space.

Concepts with age seem to be simplifying, and the notion of "-isms" seems to precede what it's "-ism"-ing.

The notion of money as a whole is a byproduct of streamlining, which has it's share of pros and cons. While we don't have to carry an entire cow to the market to trade for some food, it makes it easier to forget what the representative weight of that money otherwise is, making it easier to frivolously waste.

Consumerism is a natural byproduct of the human condition, for people within their habit of seeking patterns are otherwise prone to a combination of emphasizing and streamlining our discoveries to the point of absurdity.

There is a strange sense of cruelty within any form of embellished streamlining in that saving time tends to mean turning a blind eye onto the costs elsewhere.

Consumerism is the major con of capitalism which is what I think you're really asking about

The benefits far outweigh the negatives
