Mobb Deep is good shit
What makes them so great is the way prodigy has such a cold flow that's technically brilliant and he sounds so serious that it's almost like he really means the shit he spits. He almost sounds.... psychopathic, but in a cool way.

I really chalk the group's success up to havoc's producing. He has a very grim melodic style without it being over bearing. I find the lyrics of the group average but their selection in song themes to be much above.
I look to Nas or Gza for lyrics
90's east coast rap is some of the best and it reaches to be what rap should be. Glum, depressing themes while having some of the most engaged lyrics in personal conflictions brought about by living in an inpoverished area

The 90s were the lyrical peak, but Kanye's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" was the production peak of hip hop. I personally don't mind the "bling" era because there were people like Jay Z, Pusha T, Kanye, ect that really presented raps bravado in a cool way and Kanye in particular introduced new subject matter.
