 Why bother— to a stranger even— though. I mean look at it from his point of view, then he’s, like, beholden to at least make polite conversation with me—or something.

My bookstore has a Starbucks and whenever you make book purchases at the cafe rather than the actual bookstore, you get your receipt and a a coupon for a free cookie on your next purchase.

I think it's great! I love sweets! However lots of people just end up throwing the coupon away.

Are you sure he wasn't just going to try to give you the coupon?

    The guy ahead of me pays and turns to me saying:

do you want a free cookie?

Apparently it was BOGO— “buy one get one free”. I quickly did not truly grasp what was going on, but realized this guy was offering to buy me a cookie.

Not really, he's giving you a handout that cost him nothing to get for himself. He probably just didn't want two cookies, and saw you being all unfortunate behind him in line.

And me not accepting “gifts” from strangers,

smiled and with as much grace as I could muster (grace, really self?), and deliberate deflection of the eyes, said: oh, no thank you.

Did not really give much thought as to what the implication was if I accepted his cookie, and yet me declining, noticed he bought zero cookies overall—

  but I know I looked good today— enough to eat maybe.
