In Florida if you own acreage you also own alligators without your knowledge 😂
i always found that such a weird situation. how do they enjoy hiking, specifically the elderly, with snakes and alligators
So a shelterwood regeneration system is a way to encourage new undergrowth. It involves 3 cuts, a preparatory cut (thinning the stand), an establishment cut (only the biggest and best trees are left), and then a final over story removal (cut those large trees just before they die from age).
In my opinion it looks more aesthetically pleasing than most NY hardwood stands, because 5 years down the line you have this tall undergrowth that fills the gaps you made. Looks like this (this undergrowth is only a couple years old though):
Why would you do this?
Promotes healthy regeneration stock of new trees
Looks good to most people
Harvest makes you money to offset cost of owning property
As the undergrowth gets taller, different bird species will love to live there (I can provide a simple graphic below)
Great for getting Turkey and deer on your property
Good for hunting
If you live in NY, you can get tax exemptions through 480a bc this is forest Management
Regeneration is a natural process, this speeds it up and ensures only healthy trees make up the next rotation of trees
I still don't get this. Why not just let things come back naturally? Why even spend the time doing this? This reminds me of mowing the lawn or something like that, fuck lawn mowers
