These piplups I want are in shadow. It’s rumored I have to battle to get a shadow Pokémon . I got to lvl 20 w/o battling.

There are pokéstops that turn black and/or glitch.
Go to those and fight team rocket.
After beating them you'll get a shadow pokémon that you'll have to battle to catch.
You can choose to purify or keep them as shadow.
