My mothers grandmother was a very resourceful intelligent independent woman. She liked horses and nature, and ran her own business building houses and designing their interiors.
Something interesting is she met Harper lee, she knew her personally and was her friend, *during* the time she wrote to kill a mocking bird. And when it was published Harper lee gave my great grandmother a signed copy as a gift. My mom was there when the book was given to her, they were both buying feeel for their horses, and Harper lee was a very stubborn true grit country woman, tough as nails. Out of spite and resentment she said, “give this name here (my dad) and this will show him i am not a racist!” Because my dad flat out called HARPER LEE A RACIST. The book was her way of just telling him to shove it, because as my dad does to ppl, he really got under her skin about that.
My grandmother loved studying medicine, but she was never able to become a physician. She had all the books though and just educated herself about all of it. She was partly probably trying to absolve her ailments and better understand her very severe disability. Is why she was fascinated.
I still have all of these books. The signed Barbara bush book, the signed Harper lee to kill a mocking bird, and my grandmothers ancient out dated medical student books
